  1. Ive encountered the following problem when ripping DVD's:

    The Source DVD's are 16:9
    I rip with SmartRipper
    A create a project with DVD2AVI
I encode using TMPGEnc ver 2.52
In TMPGEnc, I have the Source Aspect Ratio set to 16:9 525 line, and output to 4:3.

When I playback the SVCD using PowerDVD on my computer, it plays back fine in 4:3 widescreen. When I play it back on my set-top DVD player (Apex 5131), it adds extra black bars to the top and bottom of the video, "Squishing" it (everything looks short and fat). It's like my DVD player thinks it is an anamorphic stream, so adds extra black bars to the top and bottom. I have a regular 4:3 tv. If I tell my DVD player that I have a Widscreen TV, it plays back fine, without adding extra bars, but I shouldn't have to do this.

Am I using an incorrect setting in TTMPEnc, or is there something wrong with my DVD player (I here Apex doesn't make very reliable players). I appreciate any info on why this is happening.

    Thanks

  2. Well, it turns out that it's a problem with my DVD player. I was able to correct the "squishing" of the video simply by turning the power of my DVD player off, and then back on. (I usually leave the player on most of the time, so it saves my Equalizer settings)

Of course, now it's not sizing my 704x480 menus correctly to 4:3. The horizontal edges are being cut-off, and the pictures look fat.

Oh well, I guess I can't expect everything to be perfect with a cheap DVD player.
