I don't know the technical name for what DVDShrink does, but it has an ability to make vobs smaller, without necessarily losing quality.

Do any of you know of a program which can do this on an straight mpg?

That is I have an mpeg, which i would like to keep as mpg, only smaller - and DVDShrink can't do this unless its a DVD and I don't want to have to author this mpeg into a DVD.

(I cleaned up the topic...well...I accidentally removed all posts and it's too much work to get them back. Please just skip the lose quality discussion as branch already knows that now. )

I'm glad I'm not the only one that deleted a topic by accident. I switched the program names. Should be correct now.

  4. Solveig MPEG-2 Requantizer (free) is another one:

Here's an explanation of how compressed domain transcoders work:

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?&threadid=63587

Transcoding removes DCT data and will degrade quality, no way around that. But it may not be noticeable if, after transcoding, there is sufficient remaining excess discrete cosine transform data (DCT), essentially error correction. Transcoding cannot remove any motion vector data. Therefore, a "talking heads" movie with little motion will have relatively more DCT data and less motion vector data than an "action" film, and will "compress" better.

  5. why stop using dvd shrink at all? If its removing protection then use dvd fab first to rip as is then shrink
