I had a similar situation with a mail order drive on a Staples special a couple years ago. Box came in, figured it was the 320gb (if I remember right...) I had ordered. Threw it in the system, formatted it...it was only 180gb or so...forget the actual number. Reran the formt, couldn't believe what was going on. Checked BIOS...everything pointed to 180gb.

Pulled the drive out, it had the right S/N to match the shipping invoice, it but it was only 180gb. Went to the local store and they wouldn't honor a replacement even though I had all the docs. Said I could have switched it myself and they'd be out a drive and I had to work with the online help desk.

I'll have to give them credit though, they came through and shipped me a replacement drive...

Just wanted to show that this can happen outside the b&m as well. Now, I stick with Newegg. Period.
    Have a good one,

    neomaine

  3. I doubt that Toshiba was supplying the warranty on that unit. If they were you would not have the old drive to test. It has to go back in the same box they overnight the replacement part in.

Under Toshiba Warranty some parts are marked "Hold 30 days and discard" Others come with a return UPS label and must be returned. Burners and HDDs must be returned.

Been there done that and still do that.

I remember reading that Best Buys deal with Dell requires them to support and do warranty on the Dells they sell. Maybe they have the same deal with Toshiba? They can probably get them cheaper that way.

I'm not seeing the Toshiba part number on that WD label or the Seagate under it. FWIW

    Cheers

Well, when i talked to Toshiba yesterday they said the laptop was under warranty until 2011 & she did not have to pay anything for the work or parts so i doubt Best Buy was taking it out of their own pocket

But yeah, they might have that same deal with Toshiba because she did buy it at Best Buy.

And i have the old 320gb Toshiba HDD from the laptop sitting right here, i did not get time last night but i am going to put it in my desktop here in a little bit and test it out.

[EDIT] @Noahtuck: So, did you wear your riding gear when you went in? Did they crap in their pants? Anyway, now that my beard's gray and I'm pushing 60, and I never thought I'd say this, but...I'm thinking about a Geezer Glide for my next bike (Honda Gold Wing).
Yeah i'm pretty cynical also when dealing with certain places or situations, better then being overly naive.

And of course i did 8)
I always wear my boots, vest and leather every where i go, along with my little dark glasses that people can only see their reflection in the shiny smoked silver lenses

Yeah, it usually works for me
But Best Buy, i seriously doubt anyone higher up would care, except about more possible bad rep.

    @ budz
Oh i don't trust them!! I have never brought anything to them and have always told everyone to never bring their equipment to them!!

    @ hech54
    Oh i know it!!
It was painfully obvious the second i opened it and saw that seagate drive with the loose WD sticker on it.
It's not even my laptop and i'm still super pissed!!
I would pay real money to get a face to face with that little bitch tech that worked on it!!

And i seriously doubt the original HDD was bad either.
I'm going to be testing it in my desktop here soon.

We don't even want to go into the 30 minute phone convo with the monkey at Toshiba!!
If i could reach through the phone, that lady would be dead right now!!
Then the moron on the phone from Toshiba was doing a major circle jerk saying the same two things over and over and could not give me a coherent answer and i just got so pissed because i knew they were full of shit, i just hung up on them.

    @ Lawbringer
Yep, i used to buy components and the like at BB, for the last few years just DVDR's, but i have not even bought that from them for a year or more.

    @ neomaine
See that's what also worried me, they could have just as easily said maybe me or her did the switch to try and get a free 2nd HDD.
Then it would have been open season in BB
