Normally, Windows ships with Windows Media Player, which should play AVI files just fine. You may need to install codecs for the video or audio encoding used in the AVI, however.

There are also a number of other players you can install, like VLC, which kevinguyen mentioned, that uses its own internal codecs, so you usually don't have to worry about installing anything else.

There are literally dozens of 100% bloateware free players that can play virtually anything you want to without installing extra codec packs that cand o more harm than good

Like suggested the simpler the better, in my opinion, all you want to do is play the video

    MediaPlayer Classic
    KMPlayer

These are the two that I use, and both can play virtually anything. KMPlayer tries to play everything without installing anything else and plays basically everything, AVI,WAV,RM, WMV, MP3, FLAC, etc, etc, etc, and DVD without installing anything else whereas a lot of other software looks for 'other' codec to play DVD

  6. MPC is outdated. Get MPCHC instead, the current version.

Get ConvertXToDVD. That will easily convert AVI to DVD. Not free, but this one is much better than the freeware options. One of the few must-buys out there.
