    hi there,

when i want to open and convert a videostream (RTMP) with VLC 1.0.3 (latest version), the conversion process stops within a few minutes, so i end up with a partly downloaded (and converted) file.

    what i select in VLC:
    1) Media --> Convert/Save --> Network
    2) Protocol: RTMP
    3) Address: rtmp://edge02.fms.dutchview.nl:1935/hetgesprek/20080516160000AMS_2_1_1311
    4) click Convert/Save
    5) Destination file: C:\directory\filename.asf
    6) Profile: Video - WMV + WMA (ASF)
    7) check Dump raw input

i tried different output settings besides ASF and WMV, and also the "Stream Output way" (which has slightly different output options), but it abruptly ends everytime. any ideas?

if not; any idea on other program(s) to save this flash videostream as lossless/uncompressed as possible, or to .asf or .avi directly (vixy.net didn't work)?

link to put in media player (URL): rtmp://edge02.fms.dutchview.nl:1935/hetgesprek/20080516160000AMS_2_1_1311

Try video downloadhelper for firefox or orbit downloader.

Or the old good rtmpdump, run from a command line prompt with just
    Code:
    rtmpdump -r rtmp://edge02.fms.dutchview.nl:1935/hetgesprek/20080516160000AMS_2_1_1311 -o video.flv
and you will get the video in an video.flv, no conversion.

before i'm using video downloadhelper or rtmpdump, can you tell me if they will give me a flash file of higher quality than orbit downloader (which i've already tried)?

No it will not. Orbit downloads the actual stream as does videodownload helper. It doesn't get any better than that what is uploaded by the server. Any other conversions will cause quality loss, such as your attempt with vlc

i used Orbit's Grab Pro to capture the video; the quality of the captured video seems slightly (ok very slightly) lower than the online stream, but i understand no program will get me a better rip, and VLC wasn't good for this anyway. ok, thanks guys.

    Hello,

this thread has been somewhat helpful, thank you! I have a related question:

I've been able to locate the rtmp URL for the streams in Swedish internet broadcasts of state television. I wish to watch these streams on Xbox/XBMC. XBMC does not support rmtp streams as such, which is why I want to re-code it to an mms/asf stream, for example.

There is a XBMC script available for viewing the Swedish internet television, but this doesn't cover the live broadcasts, which is what I'm trying to get to work.

I am able to re-broadcast mms streams without any problems.

As far as I've understood, my best shot is to re-broadcast the stream with VLC. The RTMP stream plays without error if I just use "Open network stream" (or whatever it's called in the English version) in VLC 1.03. But when I try to stream it, VLC crashes with no error message. Does anyone know why?

Is it supposed to be possible to re-broadcast rtmp streams at all, and what can I do to make this happen?
