Did you say you do have a gigabit LAN?

  3. WDTV Live, ~US$120, 10/100 Ethernet, can use external USB drive.

yes i do have a gigabit lan... and i dont know if it would really matter but i would feel better having a gigabit device...

right now i am trying to price together a cheap htpc that i would use instead... it would only need to play the stuff not convert or encode, etc.

  5. Here's one that I use:

    SageTV HD Theater

Works with or without Sage TV Media Center. Works flawlessly on my 100MB LAN. It also has a wireless adapter. Gigabit is seriously not a requirement.

I'd second the WDTV Live as an Ethernet connected player. There are others like RoKu or the PS3 or XBox360.

Then there is the whole world of Windows MCE media extenders (incl. XBox360).

Does your TV support DNLA? Also read up on UPnP.

All this is early tech that will eventually converge into the TV or an attached player. Whatever you buy today will rapidly go obsolete.

  9. For playback Boxee is much more flexible than WMC. Still a bit buggy though.

yea i will be trying boxee and xbmc but right now i am running windows media center with windows 7 x64 and have had no problems...

i have tried blue ray and mkv files. plus netflix works in WMC

i am trying to keep it to one easy interface for my mom.... that way i can just give her whatever movies, tv, etc she wants and wont have to deal with dvd players, etc.

    thanks for all the suggestions
