So I've been cutting my teeth on ripping Blurays, been kicking out 1080p h264 MKVs and so far satisfied with the results, but like everyone, I'd like to get better quality if I can. So I'm just curious what everyone's suggestions regarding settings OTHER than bitrate (R-frames, B-frames, profile, etc) that could improve the quality of the rip, if any at all.
Hard drive space isn't too much of concern for me, to some extent (I'd prefer to keep my rips at 10GB or less) and adding extra conversion time is alright if it'll mean increased quality.
I understand that a) any h264 rip can only be as good as the BD source and b) more bitrate the better (...to a point. I've been in the neighborhood of 5000 - 8000 bps depending on the quality/age of the film or quality of the conversion to bluray).
Thanks in advance!!
[edit: oh, and I don't plan on ripping any animation so I don't think I'll be needing anything like 10+ reference frames, which I hear is typical of anime scene rips, yeah?]

If anyone cares, or in case anyone else comes looking on this forum with a similar question / for this information I've been playing around with Ripbot and I've landed on settings that gives me results I've been looking for: sweet picture quality without eating up my hard drive (too much lol).
Code:Profile: 5.1 Bitrate: 9200 (or so, depending on the quality of the original BR) R-frames: 5 B-frames: 4
As I watch my vids thru a WD TV the 5 R-frames is unfortunately the max I can use now, but I'm happy with the results so meh. -
I size my BD backups to DL media, just for easy redundant backup. (About 8.5GBs) But I save them on a server for regular playback. I use MKV two pass at the default settings and I've been happy with the results.
Checking the bitrate of one, I see about 9700Kb/s overall bitrate on a two hour movie.
