I'm backing up my DVD collection on my vista laptop (which has an internal pioneer dvr-k17rs DVD-RW drive) using DVDFab 6, and quite a few of my older dvd's are coming up with cyclic redundancy check errors. I've tried other programs (anydvd + clonedvd, dvd decrypter), and cleaned the disk within an inch of its life, all to no avail. The discs which fail have tiny scratchmarks as i wasnt so careful in my youth, but they arent so scratched that it causes a skip or jump in my dvd player.

Is there an external writer out there that has a reputation for reading DVDs where other drives throw up a cyclic redundancy check?

    In general, no.
You may have luck with some external drives from Liteon, but if your source disks are cheapos even they cannot help.

I suggest you buy a HH (desktop) drive with good reading capabilities (eg. Pioneer up to 117 or Samsung 203) and try again.
