    Hello everyone,

I'll get straight to the point and the major problem that's driving me insane.

First of all i'm running Windows xp.I've been capturing in dv for years and editing videos with no problem.

I recently bought Canon HV40 for my work as an independent filmmaker.

Before that i had first a Sony HC30F and then a Sony DCR-HC94.

I never had any problems with the HC30F since my computer(and other 2 i have in the house) recognized it just fine. The HC94 was recognized for a while and then stopped(it wouldnt be recognized by my main pc and the other 2 i mentioned),but since HC30F was always recognized by windows i used it for capturing only and did my job fine, not worrying about anything.

Recently, about 3 weeks ago i tried capturing with Canon HV40 via my firewire, and it worked fine. A few days ago i tried to capture with my HV40 again but the pc stopped recognizing it.Great.
I thought it had something to do with the firewire cable,so i bought a new one, but now it still wont be recognized either by this or any of the other pc's.

I kinda lost all hope, and still...the HC30F is still recognized..(!)

But then again since my footage was shot in hdv i can't capture it from a dv,or so i hear.

    Any tips,solutions or anything?

    Cheers

    Thanos

Might be something useful in this post (or site)

    This is possibly relevant -

    (2) You recorded in HDV, but unfortunately it was set to export in DV mode, known as "DV Lock". Check your camcorder settings and make sure it is set to export in HDV instead.

So what software are you using to capture? HVD format is not detected by either XP or Vista/Win7. You must use an application like HDVSplit. If you switch the cam to standard def DV output mode it should be detected normally.

PS: Vista Home Premium or Ultimate versions of Windows Movie Maker will also detect and cap from an HDV cam in HDV mode but I still havn't been successful with the Win7 RC Movie Maker. Vegas Pro 9 does fine under Win7.

That's weird because some time ago, more than a week ago, i captured hdv from that camera just fine.

    I use Premiere pro 2.0

But the software can't be the problem. The main thing the camera itself isnt recognized by windows when turned on.
And that happens in 3 different pc's.

  6. test the cam firewire port in DV mode. if the cam still doesn't show up it's port is broken.

If you were using Premiere 2.0 for HDV capture, Premiere was detecting the camcorder not Windows.

Try WinDV for DV mode and HDVSplit for HDV mode.

It won't work even in DV.But how can it be broken, last time i tried to capture,it worked fine, and i wasn't messing with it, i'm careful with the camera

  9. ok so it might not be the cam... also try a different cable and a different computer, both with a known good firewire part. then you have eliminated everything but a bad cam port.

Yeah already tried that in other 2 pc's and bought a new fw cable as well.

The weird thing is that my previous camera is also not recognized by any of the other pc's and my very old hc30F that i mentioned, works in all 3...

The way things are going i'd like to consider buying an hdv deck, but i hear that they're very very expensive..

I'll try and see if the camera works on a friend's computer, and then i might call canon and see what happens.

  11. i would still also try hdvsplit (it's free) as it will find the HDV cam if the ports and cable are fine.

another hv would be cheaper than a deck.....

I tried HDV split but no luck. Problem is, that i would need another HDV cam, BUT from what i hear because Canon shoots in 24p cinema mode and it's the only one (and the earlier models HV20,HV30 as well), it must be the exact model..

  13. the hv40 shoots in 30i unless you change it to another mode. 24p 30p and 24f are also possible. the hv40 is the only one that does 24p.

30i, 30p, and 24f are all in the same HDV standard 30i wrapper and can be read by any HDV device. i don't know about the new hv40's 24p. it may not be readable by any deck or cam other than an other hv40.

Remove the firewire port from the device manager in Windows by right clicking and choosing uninstall. Reboot your machine and let plug and pray find the device and re-install the drivers for it

Mate I had this same problem with my HV30. One day it's recognised by the pc (windows xp sp3) the next day it isn't. I had to reload xp for other reasons and when I did it recognised the camera again. Don't know what went wrong, all I can say is I feel your pain
