I'm currently using VirtualDub to encode some videos. When I click on full processing for audio and then compression, I have an option for mpeg layer 3 which is what I want to use. When I click on it, on the right side there are supposed to options like mono/stereo, as you can see in the first picture I'm posting.

Ironically, the second picture is from my home set-up which is using windows 7 and is 64bit which is missing these options. I took the virtualdub folder from this home computer on an external drive and simply put this folder onto my work computer which is using XP and 32 bit. Without doing ANYTHING other than moving the folder into the program files of the work computer, I have all these options in the 32bit XP version where I have none of these in the 64bit Windows 7.

How can I get these options like 56kbit/24000Hz stereo, etc on my 64 bit windows 7 machine?

    thank you

    Install Lame MP3 codec.

(No idea if it's compatible with 64 bit, though.)

You do understand that 56 bit (is that even possible? I thought everything had to be a multiple of 16) and 24 KHz will sound terrible unless it is only talking with no music, don't you? Unless 24 KHz is being forced on you by some small playback device I would strongly recommend that you use 44.1 or 48 KHz.

As that's the first option listed in his screencap, I think it's just an example, not what he actually wants to do.

You're right AlanHK, it was just an example. That's why I wrote "etc." right after that. Anyway, I will try your advice when I get home. Thanks!

I've seen the same results in VDub several times in the past. Don't know why. It would happen kind of randomly. Checking the Show all formats checkbox would make them show again.

@JimmyS, unfortunately that box is greyed out and I'm unable to check it.

Good point, but it's still worth mentioning as I've encountered people from time to time who actually believe that 22 KHz audio makes files half the size of 44.1 KHz audio or use it for some other crazy reason when they don't have to.

That is quite unusual. Also, there is a 64 bit version of VirtualDub that may be worth investigating along with LameACM.

unfortunately it did not work. When I install the .inf file, the screen flashes for a second and then nothing changes. thanks for the effort anyway, I appreciate it.

The .inf file that comes with the lame acm codec is written for 32-bit windows and the right click install won't work on 64-bit windows. Look here for potential solution: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/lame-mp3-encoder-on-vista-x64-t332208.html

Oh and even if you manage to install it manually it will only show up in 32-bit version of virtualdub.

the 64 bit-lame didn't work, and then I re-installed the 32bit version of Virtualdub. That didn't work either. It's just because it's windows 7. I didn't try the suggestion that kpa made, cause it looks a bit too complicated. Thanks again for the help.

    Yes, but

    1. IF you have a need to make something 1/2 your normal bitrate...
    and
    2. IF you have material the has NO discernable important info in that upper frequency range (over 11kHz)...

you CAN make a file that uses 22kHz to better advantage and produces a file of (probably >50%) higher apparent quality than a 44kHz version.

    But, back OnTopic,
Stop trying to bring the Mountain to Mohammed; just run a 32bit version of Vdub & Lame in a 32bit Virtual Machine running a 32bit OS!

    Scott

    >>>>>>>
NOTE: there are better ways to save on MP3 bitrate: Mono streams, VBR/ABR, incorporating judicious use of SILENCE gaps in speaking programs, other NoiseReduction & filtering techniques...
