Vista Codec Pack or K-Lite Codecs

Hi folks,

I just did a Fresh Install on my laptop since it was acting up pretty bad ... and before I install a Codec Pack ... I was wondering if some of the Video experts here would be kind enough to steer me in the right direction.

I have a Gateway, with Vista Home Premium, SP1, 64-Bit. And I play around with Videos, AVIs, Music, ...

Q1: Should I install Vista Codec Pack or the K-Lite codec pack? And why if you can tell me?

Q2: If you recommend K-Lite ... should I nistall the Mega or the Plain version? Please specify?

Q3: If neither then can you give me the Minimum list of the Codecs that I must have on my laptop to have things running smoothly? Like FFDSHOW, FFMPEG, ... etc.

ffdshow should take care of almost all your needs. I do not recommend codec packs. Way to easy to screw up your system.

ffdshow or use a player with all the codecs and file splitters built in. Like MPCHC, VLC, KMPlayer.

Lordsmurf ... I think I did a cursory search and then I posted this but I will do a more "detailed" search ... I might have done a screwey search the first time ...

For Viewing I use VLC and MPC ... but I also do Video Conversions for "Fun" ... and I hope after my Search those Threads also talk about what Codecs I must have if I want to do conversions and encodings ... to & from different formats with Freeware Converters available and VDub, ...
