I have a 2006 Panasonic Plasma (TH-42PD50U) its a 42 inch. I keep seeing where the picture and volume will go out about 5-8 secs at times then it comes back on. I thought at first it was my DirectV doing it but it happen when I was watching a dvd on it the other day. Its been doing this off and on about 8 months now seems like before it would do this maybe once in a 10 hr period now it might do it 2 to three times in a 5 hr period. Is there something on the way going out? Is there something I can replace to fix this? How much am I looking at?

What type cable are you using to feed your video to the TV? If HDMI only, try a different hookup, maybe component or composite to rule out HDMI as the problem. If it does it with other inputs, then maybe the TV itself is failing.

Not sure if this will help in your case, but... are you on a Cable or satellite receiver or a PVR? If so, unplug the receiver/PVR power for a couple of minutes and then try.

I had something like this happen to me not so long ago. My TV started going black for a few seconds then back on, the black etc. After having removed all other hardware from the mix and changed the cables and ports etc I still had the problem. Finally, as I last though I unplugged the cable box. When it rebooted the problem was gone - and I was left with my living room full of cables and equipment that took 3 hours to put back.

    Might be hardware problem.
Usually some capacitors at the power supply are going bad.
This was reported for PC monitors and I just fixed one that was thrown away at work.

Low quality capacitors have service life of less than 1000 hours at their rated temperature.
If out of warranty and you can do soldering it doesn't heart to check for bad capacitors yourself.
Careful as some hold their charge long time after unplugged.
    Try at your own risk.
