Hey Baldrick, ever considered a phpbb2 mod for "thanks" for posts?
For example http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=1690905
Not sure if that's for phpbb2 or phpbb3, but that's what I mean.
vBulletin has them too, very commonly used.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays!

I'm against it. It is always end up as popularity contest.
Also I have noticed that many users bypass the answers of those that have less "thanks" and follow the advices of those with the most "thanks".
If someone wish to thank the one that helped him, he/she can do it by PM or even with a simply public oneword post. -
Better than a "one word" post, one that said what they did and that it worked -- so may threads peter out after a problem and proposed solution(s), no indications of what if anything worked, or if the poster just gave up.

I think that this is an idea worth revisiting. From what I have seen, it is very controllable. You can have the thanks show up only in the specific thread that the person was thanked, thus eliminating any type of "ranking" in non-related threads. It could be a helpful resource for indirectly showing what solution worked, since the one who thanked the solution provider would show up. I've found that it's always easier for people to click a button than to actually type it out. Sometimes people don't know how to phrase their thanks, and feel awkward doing so, even when a simple "Thanks!" will do.
I also agree with AlanHK, but at least the Thanks Button is a start.
