Quick question: I'm using the divx converter to encode some m2ts content from my Happauge HD PVR. Is there anyway to force the converter to always output with the .divx container? The .mkv container is great for the HD content but whenever I fast forward while playing a .mkv file in VLC the application crashes. Is that normal?

    Welcome to the forums.

Since you are using Divx Converter, that means you paid for the commercial Divx codec. Good for you. Please do yourself a favor and get the free Dr. Divx encoder at
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/drdivx/

Divx Converter was written for idiots to use. That does NOT mean that you are an idiot for using it. It means that it was written for complete morons to use it. If you are smart enough to post here, you are not a moron and you can learn to use Dr. Divx instead. It's not difficult at all to use and you get more control over the output. And Dr. Divx ALWAYS outputs to a Divx container.

Unfortunately it has been my experience with VLC that it crashes when doing fast forward with MKV files.

Some "heavy" video files gave me also playback troubles in VLC. The same files played in KM Player or MPCHC was no issue.

You may also consider MP4 container as an alternative to mkv.

  4. Use a better player, like MPC-HC. VLC doesn't do well on some MKVs.
