I have created a number of video tutorials, when trying to upload them to Vimeo, when trying to upload I get an error message saying that the video is in a incorrect format and needs to be converted to mp4, what is the best software to convert from avi to mp4, and depending on what is suitable will there be any limitations.

Look forward to any available help.

    Thank you.

I would use the free x264 encoder together with a GUI like the very basic H.264 Encoder or if you want more settings try HandBrake, StaxRip, MeGUI, FFCoder, etc. You convert to h264 video in a mp4 container.

But doesn't vimeo reconvert all video? And then it should support most avis but maybe not your codecs. What video and audio codec does your avi contain? Identify using Mediainfo if you don't know.

    Baldrick,

Thank you for your post if vimeo is unsuitable, what other websites would be be better, vimeo was the fist that I had come across so looks like I will have to look else where.

Vimeo accepts the common encoded videos in MP4 format.
I see here they post some guidelines on the uploaded file specs: http://www.vimeo.com/help/compression
The tools mentioned by Baldrick should do the conversion you need.
    An alternative site is Youtube.

I find winFF is an uncomplicated way to convert AVI to Mpg4, more importantly, it's FREE.
