    can anyone guide me to good software that will quickly convert WMV to AVI (or MKV) , ive tried AVI4PSP or whatever its called but i couldnt get it too work

    any help appreciated - it so i can play a WMV file on my HDTV that has USB and HD DivX

    I guess you mean xvid4psp. Try also handbrake, winff, format factory or virtualdub with the wmv plugin.

    And if they wont work then give us more details about the wmv, use mediainfo and open the wmv, change view->text and copy and paste the info here.

    I think the easy, powerful and universal thing is to use AVISynth to open WMV
    Code:
    DirectShowSource("yourfile.wmv")
    then open this .avs script in virtualdub and convert it to xvid. Should work with all other video format of source video too. Probably you need to have ffdshow installed to decode video.

    You might try Any Video Converter Free Version. Use the 'Customized AVI Movie' for best choices for output format.
