I'm totally new to video editing. All I want to do is cut about 14 minutes out of the middle of a 1 hour MP4 video file with little loss/degradation and a smaller output file than input file.
I know I'm going to lose something because I'm starting with compressed audio and video inside an MP4 container.
According to MediaInfo, here's what I'm starting with:

I've got ffdshow and the Gabest splitter. I use them to watch MP4s with Winamp. I don't know how to use them for video editing.
I tried to do the edit with VideoPad (free) but didn't see either AVC or AAC as available output codecs. I ended up with an AVI file with MP3 audio and XVID video that was about 3 times bigger than the unedited file. The XVID was 15fps and 320x240 pixels x 24 bits. The audio was 112 Kbps CBR.
I've got VirtualDub but don't know what codec to get in order to make it open my MP4.
Many TIAs for suggestions from people who reply.

Have you tried Mp4Cam2AVI (a free conversion program)? You can select the video format from compressed to non compressed and the same with audio - pcm or mp3 etc. I use it for the files from my Sanyo HD1000.
