I found some old Mini DV tapes that I had taken videos on several years ago. I used a Canon ZR 45. After finally figuring out how to capture the video using Roxio Creator 2009, I captured 5 of them. Some tapes were only partially used while others were fully used. The resulting .AVI files from the down 3 GB to 13 GB. I believe I used the SP mode when taking the video.

I have several video editing program and I realize I have much to learn. Some of the tapes have more than one session on them. I tried to split the 2 sessions so I would have a 2 resulting .AVI files that I could create videos from. I did not have much luck that way using the split option. I finally cut the second session and wound up with a 33 minute .AVI file. I then exported it into a .MOV format and wound up with a 7 GB file. This really does not seem right as most videos I have downloaded from a web site are less than 1 GB in size and they run up to one hour. Not only that, but the quality of the video in Quicktime was terrible.

What should the resulting capture file size be (approximately) for a 60 minute tape?

Is there an easy way to split the file into 2 segments using Roxio Creator 2009 or Nero 9? I have tried several others and cannot seem to find an easy way to do this.

Why would the resulting .MOV video be so large? I assume I may not have set up the conversion options correctly, but again not having done this in years, I am clueless...

Use the free WinDV to transfer DV off the tape to the computer.

Then use something like Adobe Premiere Elements to edit the video, make your menus, and create the DVD. Note that version 7 is the current version, version 8 is just a pre-order right now.

Don't use Roxio or Nero for this.

    Thanks,

I have an older version of Premier Elements 4 and will try it. I just downloaded the trial of 8 and will see how that goes.

I tried WinDV but it does not recognize my camera. The other programs picked it right up.
