How do I get still frames from a .mkv file?

Media Player classic seems to be able to do this, but most of the time the frame captured is either not the one I'm looking at, or I get an error saying that it can't get the image from the source file.

I did a search on this board, and found that the Core Media Player seems to be able to get stil frames from a .mkv file, but I'd rather not pay $20, when I already have a number of players handy.

I've also heard about Total Media Converter, which is a shareware program to convert .mkv files to .avi.

The frames I'm trying to get stills of are 1920x816.

Any advice would be of help.

  2. Avidemux , or use an avisynth script and open it up in avsp or vdub, all free

    Avidemux did the trick.

Capturing multiple still frames is a bit cumbersome, but it works.

    Thanks!

  4. You can save a range in vdub by frame numbers (file=>export => image sequence)

But vdub doesn't support mkv container natively, so you can open it up in an .avs script
