I upgraded my video card recently (from an ancient GeForce MX 440 to a modern ATI HD 3450). Ever since the upgrade I have found video playback to be slower and at times choppier.

For instance if I try to load an file on the hard disc it'll open up MPC then take a further 5-7 seconds to load the file and start playback. Previously when I had the very old Geforce in, it would load up MPC and load the file virtually instantly starting playback.

The only thing to change is the video card, absolutely nothing else could have affected this. I've tried everything I can think of - older and up to date drivers, tweaking the video card settings, trying all sorts of renderers (VMR, EVR etc) but with no luck.

Does anybody have an idea of why, with a far more powerful card, I'm getting worse performance when loading and sometimes when playing files?

    Thanks in advance

I think you may have already answered your question. It sounds like the problem is the video card. I would try a replacement card as you appear to have tried all the usual cures. I'm assuming nothing else major has changed on your PC except the card and everything else works as usual.

Uninstall the drivers and use a driver cleaner in safe mode(nvidia drivers might need to be removed thoroughly) and then install the newest driver again.

im not sure if i understand well, but you have problem only in mpc?
or some other software have the same problems?

i wouldnt judge that h/w failed basing on open source software which i find not stable and not reliable to much.
try some other software (commercial if possible), ie. powerdvd. powerdvd maybe is not a good example cause they start playback very slowly, but you can give a try with trial version. you can also try splash, its free but quite good and really fast.

I remember having an ati 9800 pro back in the day when they were no.1 when installing new drivers the only way i could get hardware acceleration to kick in was to install the drivers through the device manager, maybe your ati is acting up that way.Check thru dxdiag for any problems.

  6. Are you using MPC-HC? While it's playing a H.264 video, right-click in the playback area, go to the Filters submenu, and see what video decoding filter is listed. It could be that MPC-HC switched to GPU decoding from CPU decoding when you installed the new card...which I don't think should be slower, but who knows. When you installed the drivers for the ATI card, did you change any video options/config?

my friend has ati 3450 with vista and win7.
dxva works fine with splash. video is smooth and deinterlacing is very nice. so i guess its not a graphics card.
