  1. I have Firefox 2.0.0.20 and now suddenly when I go to a URL that ends in mp3, like for example
    http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/11/30/441298/unique.mp3
instead of going to the download dialogue box, now Quicktime pops up and tries to play the mp3.
I want to restore the old behaviour so that just the download dialogue box appears. I don't like when an application like Quicktime changes the settings on my computer without my permission.
I couldn't find anything in the Firefox settings that would solve this problem.

  2. In Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Applications

You can always right click on the link and select Save Link As.

The best thing to do is not install Quicktime.

You should also go into the Quicktime Control Panel applet, look for the Mime Types button/section, and disable the entries for the file types you don't want Quicktime to load (like MP3).

  5. I'm running xp. This is a little bit like getting rid of a roach infestation. I tried the various suggestions given, which did not work for my version of Firefox. Then I went to Add/remove programs and chose complete removal of Quicktime, and that seemed to do the trick. Now, when I click on the mp3 link, the download dialogue box pops up.
I never knowingly installed Quicktime. It must be some kind of adware/malware that installed itself.

Have you installed any other Apple program, like iTunes, or Safari? I'm not sure if there are any encoders/conversion software out there that forces a download/install of Quicktime...

jagabo's suggestion should have worked, if you changed the action for .mp3 files (or added one). Changing the MIME types would have helped to keep the browsers from directing that filetype to Quicktime, in addition.
