Did you burn it to a CD, not a DVD

I had this before when playing around with a small project that fit easily on CD. It refused to play correctly when played on my standalone when I put the CD burnt with DVD files into the player, but when burnt onto DVD media played perfectly

If you have burnt it onto CD media, try burning it again onto DVD media

I know it shouldn't make a difference, bit it did for me

I would not have expected that to work, so the result you got is what would be the normal outcome. If your DVD player does support other than DVDs, then just make sure that you have encoded your slide show in a suitable format. So, dust off your player's manual, and then do what you need to do.

Manual did not help as it suggests cd/r or cd/rw. Neither is large enough as my slide show is 1.3 gig. DVD approach did not work either. DVD copy will play on the computer but that is it. I have had no problem uploading to YouTube so maybe that is the way to continue. Does not solve my basic problem but I will keep searching.

Are you creating a DVD-Video disc from the .AVI, or burning the .AVI straight to a data disc?

If you're just creating a data disc with the .AVI file on it, note that:
    A) the players actually have to support playing .AVI files (and according to the title of the post, it sounds like one of the players you're attempting to use is a player in a car, which isn't likely to support .AVI)
    B) the .AVI has to be encoded in a way that the player(s) wants (such as an Xvid video stream, MP3 audio stream).

If you want the video to be compatible across most of the players (no guarantees on all players), without having to worry about whether or not they support .AVI playback, create a DVD-Video disc. You should be able to create a DVD-Video disc from the original .WMV, theoretically, depending on the software you use.
