Hello everyone,
I'm new here, however I don't exactly consider myself a 'newbie', at least when it comes to amateur video creation.![]()
Anyway, for about four years I've been messing around with cameras and video editing, and I've finally decided to make the switch to High-Definition. I have a film planned out that I want to film next summer with my friends, and I want to use the best audio equipment that I can.
I've found that a person can make their own boom mic for less than $50 (plus the cost of the actual shotgun mic) and I plan to do this; however I have a few questions on extension wires. This is the mic I plan on using (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/444022-REG/Azden_SMX_10_SMX_10_Stereo_Microphone.html), and this is the extension wire I'll need (http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Headphone-Extension-Straight/dp/B0002KR13M). Do any of you recommend those two purchases, or should I look for something better?
I'm not from the UK, but this is the video I found that taught how to create a boom pole for cheap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr3uqfvQblA&feature=related). I really like that guy!
Thanks to all who provide advice!

Basic answer, high impedance is good for a few feet. Longer cables will generate noise.
Pro mics operate at low impedance and require a transformer for interface with a consumer camcorder. Low impedance mics can use long cables. Some prosumer camcorders have low impedance 600 ohm mic/line inputs.
Low impedance balancesd XLR cables and connectors are typical for anything over about 5 feet. A popular mic mixer for camcorders is the Beachtek.

A simple mono 600 ohm mic can be interfaced with this Shure transformer.
