Ok how about a thread similar to the random thoughts thread but geared specifically for tech stuff. Post stuff you wish manufacturers would do that would make certain things easier or more intuitive or just plain work.

    My first one:

I wish Comcast would have an HD CHANNEL SWAP button so when I'm on an analog channel I could instantly switch to the hd channel with the push of a button.

Yes I know I can simply surf through the hd channels but I'm not always in the 190+ range when watching tv. Also not every channel is duplicated in hd yet - they are getting a lot more but not all. So I"d like to be able to hop from analog history channel to the 212 hd channel instantly while fllipping.

An operating system written directly and entirely in Assembler code
would be a good start. The death of the 1-byte character sets.
Less programming languages, and none of them being a subset of the English tongue. 8)
Ambisonics killing and burying the LFE-channel nonsense. :P

Well, we all have the right to dream.

  7. When I bought my first CD recorder, I was mesmerized with the fact that the biggest HD for the time was only half a GB.
I actually had to do a LOT of work to fill one of those 640MB babies.

I wish an optical recorder would appear with the same ratio than those days.

Today's biggest HD is what... 1.5 TB?. that would mean an optical disc with 1.9TB capacity.

  9. Even better!, that would mean that the disc would need to have 2.56TB of space.

Are we even close in that field?..... lol!

I'm hoping for (and know of a few people working on) electron deceleration. Basically, you can create a slow electron flow around a given area with atomic precision.

The result? Keeping components cool. Even better is having an A/C unit that size of a toaster that would cool a room by 20-50 degrees F within minutes, using less power than an iPod.

I really wish it will happen so.
The "8-bit character sets" were good enough for the mainframe era,
but they've been a serious annoyance in the world of today.

    Hmmm... interesting.

Turn on computer and it boots instantly from cold start. Meaning no waiting for the PC to warm up. I mean if your TV did that, you'd shoot it.

Isn't that what solid state harddrives are supposed to offer? Ask around here on the forum.

I think redwudz had a thread on ssd drives awhile back.

edit - yep back in april:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic366366.html#1954735

He posted it was 30% faster boot times. Maybe not instantaneous but definitely faster by the sounds of it.
