    Hi I'm kind of new here so be gentle o.O

    I have a lot of videos I need to compress for storage / uploading. I want to compress into H.264 - what's the best program around that does this?

    The videos in question were captured using FRAPS and are at the moment approx. 1gb/1min.

    Don't know shiz about formats / codecs - just know that MPEG-4 / H.264 is the best format / codec to use at the moment.

    Thanks in advance.

    Since you don't know "shiz" and want us to be gentle, you could always try researching and using the guides to the left. Also, check the glossary then Tools to see what gets the best ratings.

    I have already tried researching and a lot of guides pointed towards this site, hence my asking on the forums.

    The guides to the left are concise yes, but I am looking for varied opinions and a specific answer.

    Research on this site.

    Search the forums, browse Video Conversion. There are already many topics on this subject. Do at least a little work and people here will be gentle.

    Saying that you know nothing won't get you as much help as stating that you researched you options from the Tools section and are trying to choose between X, Y and Z.

    Install MeGUI (and AviSynth if needed)

    Install Virtual Dub

    Import your file into VirtualDub (using an avs script if needed)

    Video -> Compression -> ffdshow -> H264
    Regards,

    Rob

    I have to agree that MeGUI is one of the best h.264 converters around right now (and it's free ) It can be a bit tricky to use, but there are some good guides around. For a video guide detailing some of the basics, I'd try here and for a rundown of the AviSynth creator in MeGUI (which, in my opinion, is one of the trickier parts of MeGUI) try here. Also, just go to the "All guides" section under "HOW TO" in the top left of this page and set the "Search guides by Tool:" drop down to "MeGUI." Of course, there are others out there, but I personally recommend MeGUI - I've used it a lot for DVD conversion work and it does a good job (though remember that it might take your computer a long time to do the converting - H.264 is high quality but can take a long time to encode.) Oh, for what it's worth, I'd also recommend a 2-pass encoding (typically gets higher quality at a lower file size at the cost of longer time to convert.)

    No need for VirtualDub, MeGUI plays the role already. Use MeGUI's AVS Script Creator to import the file, then encode it with one of the x264 presets.
