I am currently using windows 7 and virtual dub. I tried encoding a file but got the "audio decompressor could not be found source tag format 2000, etc. I already have the AC3ACM plug in installed and I'm still getting this message. I have virtual dub installed on my other computer (windows xp) and under audio>compression, AC3, Divx Audio, windows media audio v1 and windows media audio v2 show up. On my windows 7, I have all the plugins that the xp one does and more and these 4 plugins? codecs? don't show up. Is it a problem with windows 7? Because I can encode easily with my xp machine. anyone else having windows 7 problems?

Do you have AC3Filter AC3/DTS Codec installed? Also, you need more than just the AC3 plugin (that is for importing AC3 audio). You need the AC3 ACM decompressor.

actually I may not have the filter. I'm not sure. I've downloaded so many things I can't keep track anymore.

thanks I'll try it when I get home.

I assume that Windows 7 is a 64bit OS so you may have to load your 32bit codecs using this option.

Installing 32bit codecs on Windows 64

Extract all the files to a folder (you can use free 7zip to extract the files)

Open up a command prompt (start->run: cmd)

Change directories to sysWOW64 ("cd C:\windows\syswow64")

Type the following (replace example_path with the actual path to the extracted files), then hit enter:
    rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:\example_path\AC3ACM.inf

This method can be used for installing other 32bit codecs such as Huffyuv that install via a .inf file.

EDIT: I thought I read somewhere that Windows 7 was supposed to ship with all the necessary codecs.

EDIT: If 64bit Windows doesn't know where to install the codecs on it's own then why should we expect the programmers of Windows 7 to know where to install the codecs.
