I have a GoVideo VR2940 combo VCR / DVD writer. I have used the GoVideo to make DVD copies of my VCR tapes using DVD+R discs. These generally played fine on the GoVideo

Recently the GoVideo is starting to have problems so I became aware that to make my DVDs compatible with any DVD player, I needed to finalize the DVDs. There is a feature in the GoVideo that when the DVD menu comes up on a disc you can go "up" a layer and do things like erase (for rewritable DVDs) and there is a Finalize option. If I can get to the finalize option, then the DVD is playable in my standard DVD player

When inserted into the GoVideo, some of my DVDs go right into the menu where I can finalize. Some refuse to read
just say DVD+R (Empty). There is no obvious reason why some work and some don't. All of them have been played on the GoVideo at one time, but again I think it is dying.

Meanwhile I am thinking surely some device other than the GoVideo is capable of finalizing the DVD so it can be played on any DVD. I took one of the failed DVDs and put it my computer

I have VideoLAN VLC and it wants to play the DVD as soon as it is recognized.
If I let VLC play the DVD it runs through two sets, one called VIDEO_RM.DAT, which "plays" quickly but has no video
then it plays VTS_01_1.VOB and eventually the movie starts and plays fine on the computer.
Hallelujah it least the movie still exists, as I have gotten rid of the VCRs.

I can open Roxio Media Creator and go to Disk Utilities to see the disk information . I have no idea what I am looking at but here is what I see. The layers expand for more data

    DVD+R, single session (with Mode 1 data - Incomplete), 1 Session(s), 2 Track(s), Appendable, Free Space 2.3 GB ...
    --- Session 01 (2 tracks, data only)
    --- Track 01 - Data mode 1 - Start;0 Length: 15,872
    --- Mode: Data mode 1
    --- Start: 0 Block address (00:00:00 MSF / 0.0KB
    --- Length: 31.0MB (03:31:47 MSF / 15,872 Blocks
    --- Is copy permitted
    --- Track status: Reserved

    --- Track 02 - Data mode 1 - Start:15,888, Length: 2,279,216
    --- Mode: Data mode 1
    --- Start: 15,888 Block address (03:31:63 MSF / 31.0MB)
    --- Length: 4.3GB (506:29:41 MSF / 2,279, 216 Blocks)
    --- Is copy permitted
    --- Track status: Incomplete

    Session Properties
    Session Status Open
    Number of Tracks 2

Can you tell me what I am looking at, and what can I do to make these DVDs playable?

    Thanks - tgilbert@gvtc.com

Before you spend too much time on this - I figured out if I just wait about 2 minutes, it finally decides there is a DVD+R and then it will let me finalize it. I figure prayer helps too... who knows why these things are so picky
    Thanks anyway - Tom Gilbert - tgilbert@gvtc.com
