Hey guys!
Encoding VCD mpegs from video captures or DVD is one of my favourite past-time!
I use TMPGEnc all the time. Just want to know which processor should I consider in future. Currently, I have an AMD TB 800MHz. A 1-hour footage takes about 2 1/2 hours to encode.
I am wondering how fast are the Athlon XPs at encoding MPEGs, and of cos the Pentium 4s. How much boost are the SSE 2 of the P4?
Let's compare say a real-clock 1600Mhz Athlon and 1600Mhz Pentium 4.

I remember reading somewhere that SSE2 was going to be used in future releases, so it looks like they're leaning toward intel pentium 4 architecture.

Interesting question. On most applications, a 1.6 ghz Athlon will crush a 1.6ghz P4, but TMPGEnc is one of the few programs out there that supports SSE2.
All I can tell you is that my dual 1.2ghz AMD system encodes VCDs in high (not highest) quality at a little bit better than realtime. A 90 minute widescreen movie normally takes about 75-80 min to encode.
It seems that the VCD-encoding world needs some kind of TMPGEnc benchmark. If there were some kind of standard, then it would be much easier to compare machines than it is right now.
