I want to rip a DVD (main movie only) into a mkv so it will retain the chapters. However, I also want to shrink the DVD from 4GB to approx 1.5GB. What is the best method for doing this?

Shrink to mkv using Handbrake. Rip chapters with ChapterXtractor and add to the mkv using mkvtoolnix.

Maybe you can do all that in MeGUI also.

Handbrake will keep the chapters. No need for anything else.

    Thanks Supreme!

Is there a way to have chapters in an xvid or just mkv?

Put the xvid in an mp4 container with Yamb. Follow Baldrick to get the chapters.

I tried doing it with Handbrake but playback was very choppy on the original XBOX using XBMC.

I used the Normal profile, format mkv, file size locked at 1500MB, and audio mp3 @ 192.

Edit: I'm trying again with roughly the same settings but changing the codec from h.264 to xvid to see if that helps. Perhaps the h.264 video was too much for the xbox to handle.

Edit2: Well that failed, the video played ok but was horribly interlaced and lost chapter support.
