Based on LordSmurf's recommendation, I bought an Epson V300 scanner (I felt I didn't need the Digital ICE feature, so I didn't buy the V500). In general I'm very happy with the quality of the slide scans it makes, but I've encountered a frustrating problem. On slides with a dark bottom section, the scanner decides there is no image data in that area, and it chops the bottom off in the preview/final scan. I've set the preview thumbnail size to "large" (the largest setting), and it shows the border of the mount on three sides, but the bottom still gets chopped off. Turning the slide upside down doesn't help either. Any suggestions?

I have a similar issue with my Epson V500 which I use for my 2 1/4 chromes.

I think it's an issue with the EpsonScan software. It's ok for general use, but not the best.

I like SilverFast from LaserSoft. You can download a 30 day trial from their website. You need to get the version that's specifically for your scanner.

I've read posts from people who swear by VueScan. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but it's on my list.

I'm using an old 2400 series Epson. If the software allows it, assuming it's similar: I drag the mouse over the "dotted line" outlining the object being scanned and drag it out to include what I need.

I liked the software packaged with the Canon Lide series better - it was more intuitive: Especially when scanning multiple items.

    CSULB71,

The online user guide (for the v300) at the epson web site says you can manually adjust the scan area, as classfour suggested, if you are in "Home Mode" or Professional Mode" (but not if you are in "Full Auto Mode" or "Office Mode"). Here's a link to the section of the online manual that covers "Previewing and Adjusting the Scan Area" (once you're in one of the workable modes).

If using "Thumbnail preview" doesn't let you resize the marquee to include a larger area, switch to "Normal preview".

Good supplement VegasBud - I'd forgotten that mine is set in "Professional Mode". Sometimes I take things for granted.

I've not run into this issue. I use advanced modes, when available, however.

VegasBud: Using "Normal" preview was the solution.
I've gotten used to using "Professional" mode with Thumbnail previews, and had no problem with normally exposed (no super-dark areas) slides. I did try the Normal preview before, but I didn't see how to use the marquee tool to select the scan area. In Thumbnail preview, the scanner just cut off the dark area, and it wouldn't let me expand the marquee area beyond what it pre-scanned ('cause there was nothing there). Thanks, too, for the on-line link.
