    could i force vlc player to use coreavc or ffdshow somehow?
    some of 1080p mkv files will not play smooth with vlc.

    i never heard of using external filters with vlc.

    isnt easier to get another player? mpchc, kmplayer, splash...

    1080p videos use heavily PC system resources, so you should have PC that is able to handle the playback of such files.
    Check the video card if it is able to do the job properly.

  4. Your PC is fine for playing 1080p. You just need to use an h.264 decoder that's multithreaded. Try MPCHC. It has its own multithreaded h.264 decoder, can use DXVA to use your graphics card's h.264 decoder (ATI 1300 doesn't have this), or it can use any DirectShow installed h.264 decoder like CoreAVC Pro, ffdshow mt, or Divx7.
