ALl of us here try to help each other with CDROM / CD/RW and DVD issues including hints, websites, etc. Well, I just went through the trouble of documenting what is most likely the most common CD/DVD/CDRW root cause of problems for Jeff (Predator) so you would all know about ASPI and what happens ?

Adaptec creates the 2002 Programming Blunder of the year

Adaptec just released version 4.70 of ASPI (Adaptec invented it) and here is what they did to win the Blunder award

    1) Instead of one release that would interigate your system and install as it should, they have 5 !!!! 4.70 releases...1 each for XP, 2000, ME, 98 and 95......Oh Joy.

    2) If you have XP, you can't just execute the XP version, you have to tell it XP32 or XP64 (in case you have an Itanium system)....Like the software cant tell.

    3) Lastly and biggest blunder of all . ASPI is 6 files, 4 main one which must all match in release. Adaptec has determined that only pairs need to match so that 2 files at 4.6 and two at 4.7 is okay..as long as it is the right pairs. Unfortunately, ASPICHK which checks this tells you that your ASPI layer is not correctly installed even though it is.

And how do I know this ? Because I dug far enough into the files to find a readme that says this near the very end of a multi page doc.

Thank you adaptec for making this blunder.

  2. I doubt that Adaptec's staff reads these boards. E-mail the thank you to them, or they won't ever see it.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

I did write them today....Told them the impact would be on millions going forward (everyone has an ASPI Layer), but no answer as of yet.

  4. Can the .ASPI files cause other programs (Video Factory, VideoWave, or U's Movie Factoy) to not work.
And do you need to update ASPI files? I'm a newbie having trouble getting those programs to recognize my LG CD burner for making a VCD.
Could there be some shared file that is causing me trouble?
    Thanks
