AFAIK, those Western Digital WDTVs are nothing more than nmt based solutions. Symbas and the nmt community write the software and the applications. So, whatever appears on popcorn hour / egrate / etc, appears soon or later on WDTVs.
And all of them have problem with the ssa subtitles. so the anime fans can't really use them for watching them.
There are some ideas to convert those machines for internet tv. I follow the nmt community forum and there is some success in that direction.
But overall, I believe that the best solution we have today is a laptop running GeexBox. Cost around the same and gives more. -
re: subtitles on the WD TV Media Player (the original)
In my experience, dropping an AVI and the ".srt" subtitle file (otherwise named the same) into the HD attached to the WDTV let the device display the subtitles without a problem. I would have liked the ability to enlarge the subtitles with a preference setting but that was a minor complaint. I do not know if they added this preference to the new network-enabled player. I'll bet if enough people ask for it, they'll add it to the next firmware update. -
The WDTV Live has several choices of subtitle size when displaying SRT subs. They range from 24 to 40 (point? pixels?). I don't know how this corresponds the the original WDTV's sub size.

I'm very interested in this technology.
What's the difference between version 1 and version 2 of the WD TV live HD Media Player?
I've done some online searches and I'm not finding a lot of sellers... Who are some of the reputable retailers that are selling this item?Sometimes I wonder, why is that frisbee getting bigger? Then it hits me... -
The major difference is the addition of an 10/100 Ethernet port so the Live can access network shares and some internet content (very limited right now, Youtube, Flickr, Pandora). It also supports wireless networking USB sticks. Component outputs were added too.

Internally, the live has a stronger CPU and more memory. A lot more room for future updates (no promises from WD though).

One thing which confuses me when trying to author dvd's following the instructions here, is:
If i play the video_ts folder (which the WDTV Live can do) I don't see the subtitles.
But if i take the content from the video_ts folder and put it into an ISO and play that ISO it does show the subtitles (so far in weird colors though) - oh well - there are worse problems in the world i guess. -
dear all,
one question...
as we know the WD HD TV Generator.2 have an HDMI 1.3 which should can read HD-Audio like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA and pass it.
My receiver is Onkye 807 and support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, so if i connect WD HDTV media player to my receiver by HDMI and play movie that have a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA , the quistion is can my receiver Read it and see the logo lamp of Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA turning ON on my receiver display?
thanks... -
I would suggest posting your question here https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/311266-New-WD-TV-Live-%28WDTV-v2%29
