I did some research and found out that I didn't need a gigabit router, just a gigabit switch, a $35USD D-Link from newegg

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127083

My router will feed my daughters PC in the basement, and also feed the switch I am about to purchase to use as a high speed bridge between my 2 PC's w/ OB gigabit ethernet

I was warned that when you connect a gigabit switch to a 10/100 router that the switch may default to 10/100 on all connections, but that was the older less sophisticated switches, I called D-Link up on the phone and asked them and they verified that I can bridge my 2 PC's @ gigabit speed w/ their gigabit switch and then connect the switch to my 10/100 router w/ out it defaulting to 10/100 speed on all ports

I have mine hooked up through a Netgear gigabit switch. Router to computer is switched as 10Mb/s where computer to computer is connected gigabit. That is the way a switch is supposed to work.

A hub will default everything to the slowest connection. Don't use a hub.

Do you think I will need a crossover cable?

  4. If you're just connecting computers and a router to the switch you don't need a crossover cable.

I think most GbE devices support Auto-MDIX so there shouldn't be a need for crossover cables any longer. The devices are smart enough to know which sort of connection they should have.

I ended up going w/ the 8-port D-Link Gigabit switch rather than the 5-port D-Link Gigabit switch

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082

    The 5-port was $39.99USD-$3.99USD instant rebate, $10USD mail-in rebate and $1.99USD shipping

The 8-port was $49.99USD-$10USD instant rebate, $15USD mail-in rebate and free shipping

Making the 8-port actually a couple of dollars cheaper

    additionally....

The 5-port has 112KB per device buffer memory

The 8-port has 144KB per device buffer memory

This DLink 8-port from Amazon is the one I gotl!
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FITKK8?ie=UTF8&tag=thdifa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=17...SIN=B000FITKK8

Only $39.99 for that one, and it also has the $15 rebates!

I've had trouble with Newegg rebates before. (Verbatim DVDs, anybody?)
    No problems from Amazon.

Also grabbed a few $16 Gigabit NICs.

hmmmm......I'm not sure if it is fair to knock newegg if you don't get a rebate from a product they sold you, I would think the blame resides w/ the manufacturer that offered the rebate

ps. looks like we got the exact same switch for the same price

Did you have to pay for shipping LS?
