    Okay let me frame this:
I have a cheap DVD player (not BluRay, not HD). I want to be able to extract clips from some of my movies and recompile their files — including their VOBs — into a montage that I burn onto a blank DVD; but I'd like to test that what I've extracted and heavily edited off of the original, commercial DVD, actually came through intact before I waste a blank DVD . . . and then discover after the fact that my cheap DVD player won't take it (for whatever reason).

I've used the VLC player in the past but ironically I'm concerned that it is so powerful it will be "forgiving" of any crummy editing on my part, and compensate for my errors by playing DVD files I've created that my cheap player won't ultimately take once burned to a blank DVD.

I hope that makes sense. :P

Is VLC a reliable testing platform for someone with my cheap hardware? or would there be a better one you could recommend? I'm on W2K. Thanks!

Well you can take your finished project and see if it opens in DVD Shrink. Shrink is pretty particular about DVD structure. That at least will cover the first step towards burning a playable DVD.

  3. VLC is not necessarily a good test, because it can often play broken streams.

To troubleshoot, you should provide more info on your exact steps, and the software/settings used at each stage

    e.g.

    how did you extract clips?
what did you use to edit?
what did you use to encode/export?
what did you use to author the dvd? settings?
what did you use to burn? settings? dvd-video or data disc?
    media type/brand?
    player model?

This is a good question, but most playback problems actually are due to poor media. In the USA that means that you have to buy either Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (you'll have to order TY discs online) and nothing else.

Note that some DVD players, particularly older ones, had problems playing back dual layer consumer burnable discs. There is no fix for this should your player have this problem.

Brilliant. That is exactly the intelligence I was looking for MysticE. No aspersions on Shrink's Technical Manhood; I need a weaker engine to match the pathetic DVD player my rip will be playing on heh heh.

And though you are not on a Mac, perhaps others doing a search someday for a similar thing would like to know that Apple's own DVD Player is fairly fussy, too, and can be used as an informal "compliance tester" in much the same way as you're using Shrink.
