I'm actually making an inquiry for someone else. The only digital cams I've ever used are MiniDV and Digital8, they've been pretty straighforward. This other person has a Sony Handycam DNC-DVD1008, they say it's been giving them fits trying to upload the video.

It's my understanding the whole idea is what you shoot on one of these is supposed to be immediately playable in a DVD player. What's the story with trying edit from one? My understanding is that the mpeg files on a DVD aren't particularly edit friendly. Does it dump the raw content when you upload to a computer or do onboard conversion?

You can usually just copy the contents to your HDD, but make sure you finalise first in the camera. If it uses video mode then you will get a video_ts folder like any DVD. If it uses VRO mode it can be harder to work with.

Editing is best done with a smart rendering, mpeg-2 friendly editor such as Videoredo or Womble Mpeg Video Wizard or Tmpgenc Video Editor.
