Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it? I uninstalled the drivers and the scanner and reinstalled but it did not fix the problem. I scanned a couple of months ago with no problem but went to scan today and can't get it to scan without these colored lines.

Installed it on my other PC and the problem remains.

Looks like it's a piece of junk. The last HP product I buy. The last HP printer I had lasted about 6 years but I used it a lot. I hardly ever use this scanner. Had it about 2 years. Bought it and another HP printer at the same time. The printer will probably take a crap now. My $650 19" HP monitor died 4 months ago. Nine years is a long time for a monitor I guess but I have a 27" Sony Trinitron that's 17 years old and I paid less for it than I did for the 19" monitor.

My 10 year old Visioneer would still be going strong but the (proprietory) power supply broke. I paid $49.99 for it and got about $100 worth of software with it for free. The HP scanner was around $120 and only came with HP Image Zone software which comes free with every purchase of ink. I should've looked at the 90 day limited warranty and known it would not last very long.

I feel you. I just bought a 4400 series that has issues right out of the box. I e-mailed tech support and they sent me a link to an article that is completely unrelated to the problems I'm having.

If you look at the site's forums, people EVERYWHERE are having issues with their HP scanners. From my personal experience, they are making products that have different features on different machines. If you're running Vista, this feature works but won't on XP... you need a Mac for this other listed feature to work, etc.

This is the last time I buy an HP product.

  4. The trend in all electronics, not just HP, is toward cheaper crap with shorter lifetimes. It's a race for the bottom. You should consider them all disposable items now.

  5. luck of the draw. some last and some die a quick painful death. my hp 6300 scanner is 10yrs old and still fires up everytime it's needed. i'm sure most others have been recycled by now.

I don't mind throw away scanners if they're $49.99 but a $125 scanner should scan more than 30 or 40 documents before it bites the dust. I hope my $900 Samsung TV lasts more than a couple of years.

I only buy HP printers. I have an old Deskjet 970cxi and a Deskjet 5740 that are still going strong. My scanners have always been Canon...little USB powered jobs...they never fail.

True, but this item doesn't work correctly out of the box. I expect better than that. I also expect all features on all OS's unless otherwise specified on the box.

I know better than to expect tech support to know what they're talking about.
