  1. A previous post here was:Rotate Video file from iPhone - Alex77 and poisondeathray were talking a few months ago about this problem about retaining the rotation for an Iphone: I might have a similar problem.
    I have a quicktime mpeg4(and also now a .mov clip conversion of it) that I am trying to rotate, but after saving rotation changes and uploading to Viddler, the display simply reverts back horizontal again!
    Can anyone answer how to solve this issue.

    I converted the file to avi but I lost the sound file that went with it..... then when I tried another way of converting to avi, when attempting to open it, it crashed my computer and movie maker definitely didn't like it or recognise the avi I made from the .mov or mpeg4.

    I dont have quicktime Pro, so I took your advice and I have just downloaded avidemux but cannot see any user instructions in the help files.

    If avidemux is the only way left to to, can some one guide me - I explored avidemux opened my .mov in it, selected the filter of 90 degree rotation, but unfortunately I dont know how to action and apply it from there on. I just want to save it so movie is fixed as vertical not horizontal.

    the actual clip is posted if that is any help to see the problem, its

    Many thanks to anyone that can help

  2. in avidemux,

    1) video sidebar=>x264 , configure your options (e.g. bitrate)
    2) video filters=>rotate
    3) audio sidebar=>aac, configure your options
    4) format=>mp4
    5) press save & enter extension (e.g. "myfile.mp4")

    It might be a limitation of the site you are uploading to. i.e. if they expect a certain aspect ratio, or dimensions, it might flip it for you, even though you re-encoded it and it plays fine locally on your pc

    If this is the case, you might have to flip it and put black borders around it in the same frame dimensions as the website permits (i.e. letterbox). This means your image will be very very tiny, surrounded by a huge sea of black borders

    Your link is incorrect (it goes to the main site)

  3. Hi thank you for your quick reply. I have no idea what bitrate should be set nor the other settings, but I will give it a try to configure the avidemux as you suggest. my clip is a 640 x 480 -
    oops that url should hopefully be
    http://www.viddler.com/explore/mcaven/videos/6/

    so my clip should be housed in a border.....not sure yet how to do that
    The mpeg4 does not open in avidemux so I will be using the .mov as that opens.
    many thanks

  5. What is your original source clip dimensions and aspect ratio? Better yet, upload a short sample of the original clip to a free hosting site (e.g. mediafire.com, megaupload.com)

    If its 4/3 AR, then it looks like it might display correctly on that site without letterboxing or pillarboxing

    I don't understand why you have both a .mov and .mp4 ? Does your camera shoot both?

  6. Hi Poisondeathray
    I develop information brochure style websites for NZ customers on a shoestring budget. I am virtually doing this clip embedding for nothing because I have spent so much time on it, but I am like a dog with a bone and want to solve everything no matter how long it takes me.http://www.webdesinz.com Normally I have absolutely no problem with streaming videos from websites.... but yes you would be right to think I dont know much about video editing...
    My web customer sent me the quicktime mpeg-4 file to upload and display on his website. He turned the camera to shoot it. So it was an mpeg-4 video clip, 640 x 480, AAC, 48,000 kHz, and it looks to me like its a 4 to 3 ratio because it displays horizontally. (which is wrong for this clip to view)

    The reason I possess both mpeg and mov is because I downloaded free conversion software in order to rotate the setting and chose to output it to a quicktime .mov.
    This rotated movie was looking ok on my desktop. I uploaded to viddler and it came out displaying horizontally again.

    I took your advice and uploaded to mediafire; the embed link is http://www.mediafire.com/?k2wknw2zjgu Yes; yay it works; it keeps vertical; but you cannot stream it online, only download the file.
    My customer is going to want the clip to stream from the website, and I know that I would not be bothered to download a clip that I didnt know what was in it first. However, now you have opened my eyes to a possible alternative. I can approach my customer and suggest to him to either re - film or just accept that readers will have to download the clip to their desktops in order to see the clip.

    Unless of course we are somehow able to fix this to stream vertically. I dont mind it appearing small, to fit the existing AR. As long as it streams. Would it be possible for you to do it for me? I dont really understand how to adjust the settings in Avidemux..
    Many thanks

  7. Most likely it's a limitation of the hosting website

    Here is the clip pillarboxed. I don't have an account there (and I don't feel like signing up), so you'll have to upload and test it, I'm not sure if it will accept it or if it will work, but I suspect it should. They will re-encode it, just like most free hosting sites
    http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mlrm1zydnmm

    Briefly, all I did was flip it - but that gives you 480x680 with aspect ratio of 0.75 (i.e. tall and skinny). The video site probably expects 4/3 AR. So I added 184 pixels of black border each to the left and right, making it 848x640 (roughly 4/3 AR). There was one other snag, that your source video uses a variable frame rate, so I had to use another program, avisynth to "fix" it and make it a constant frame rate

    If you want me to go into more details of how this was done let me know.

    Cheers

  9. Hi Poisondeathray,
    I am reading your last posting again, and am happy with that information you gave me for now. I dont think I would attempt another rotation myself, if any customers asked. This is a one off!

    If any other readers find themselves facing this issue, they may gain quite a bit of enlightenment by reading this forum!

    Forums are great! Long live Forums! :P
    Once again thank you for your help!
    Best Regards,
    Gillian
