I have a 2 Samsung drive system, running Vista Home Premium, and using an Asus M2N32 MB with AMD cpu.
Original 2 drives -
S183L
S203B
The original problem slow CD Audio ripping with the S183L 8X reading an audio CD using Nero DiskSpeed. The S203B reads at 28X.
Thought it was the drive, bought a new S223L and it still reads only 8X, the S203B reads 28X. Swapped SATA ports and still the same read speeds 8X/28X for both drives.
I downloaded the Samsung Magic Speed utility and I can't change the speed to max speed, stays at 8X.
Am I wrong in assuming that both the S223L and S203B drives should both read at 28X, even without the Magic Speed Utility?
What in my system would cause the S183L or S223L to read so low?

What are you ripping? Commercial cds discs? Burnt cd discs?
Your mobo is a NVIDIA chipset controller. Update the chipset drivers from the NVIDIA website and not the mobo website. Go into your mobo bios and disable RAID. Run SATA as IDE in the mobo bios as well. If this isn't done the SATA DVD Burner will not work correctly. Make sure the SATA ports the dvd burners are using are not using the RAID sata ports.
There is 3rd party (hacked) firmware to use with your SAMSUNG drives. I own the 183L & S203B. I like using the hacked firmware to rip at faster speeds & to get better burns. Go to the SAMSUNG FORUM at CDFreaks.com to read up on hacked firmware. -

NVIDIA sata chipset controllers are just one of the reasons why a SATA DVD BURNER will not work correctly. I know this because I once had a NVIDIA Asus mobo for a socket 462 AMD cpu. -

Does your 183L spin up when you extract CD audio, mine does not spin up on either the 183L or the 223L, the 203B does. Sort of points to the L versions with Lightscribe locing out spin up when an Audio CD is detected. -
Sorry I didn't read your post correctly.
I'll have to test out the 183L and hook up the S203B to see if it spins up. It'll have to wait until the weekend as I don't have much time in the next few days. -
Thanks,
It is definitely stumping me. I also have an old WIN XP system which also has an Asus MB but not with the NVIDIA chipset and I'm going to try the 183L on that to see if there is any improvment with reading speed. -
you need to change your firmware! have a look here...

Tried downloading that patch utility from the codeguys site and Mcafee is reporting a Generic PWS trojan....
Looking at that thread I don't see any place where you could increase the CD audio ripping speed.
Rememeber that both my 223L and 203B read and write CD data disks and DVD data disks at a fast speed. It's just the slow CD audio extration on the 223L drive.
Since this happens with both a 183L and 223L which has lightscribe, I'm starting to think that the Samsung L's are crippled when facing CD audio extraction -

it's a firmware hacker so i'd expect a few antivirus programs to take notice. don't worry about it!..
i have a 223h that i unlocked a while back with this tool. i did it for the increase in data speeds, but now you got me to thinking... i do remember i did rip a few audio cd's with it. it did seem kinda slow but i didn't really think much of it at the time.. mine also has lightscribe.
but if you wanna try the firmware, it's safe and worth a shot anyway?I am just a worthless liar,

I have the patcher running, but now I don't see any hacked firmware listed for the 223L. What do I do now?
-
it's been a while, but if i remember correctly you use the patch utility to create your own hacked-firmware. you download the official firmware from samsung's website, then use the tool to create and save a new, 'hacked' version of that firmware. then you use samsung's TSDNWIN flash download tool to flash your drive with the new firmware you created.
