    What would the best bitrate be to convert MPEG2 TS HDTV 1920x1080 stream to H264 at same resolution for AVCHD playback on a BD5?

  2. one that fits

    You are limited to about 4.37GB, so that's not going to be much running time.
    filesize=bitrate x running time

    You can use a bitrate calculator, but it's not straight forward; you have to add about 5-7% overhead for .m2ts container, and don't forget the audio bitrate

    ripbot264 does a good job of making it fit in my experience (you can lock the size and it will figure out the bitrate for you), if you don't want to do it manually, and pretty easy to use. The only thing to be aware of is some standalone players have issues with the preset GOP size (they studder on seeking ff/rw), you can add this to the commandline --keyint 24 --min-keyint 2

    Sorry I didn't elaborate in my original post. What I was looking for was to keep the same quality without artifacts. I think I found a good setting using Mediacoder. Setting it to the 50 mark on the quality based setting does a pretty good job of reducing the size of the file, while keeping the quality very near to the MPEG2 TS file. It also is now playable in my Sony 550 BD player without glitches.
