  1. I just recently reformatted my HDD and am trying to reinstall all the programs I had before. I am pretty much there but am having problems playing any .vob files. I was playing them before using windows media player and my dvd player program ASUSDVD. Now when I try playing .vob files with WMP 11 it won't play and just shows the filename over to the side in red. When I try to play it with ASUSDVD it just shows a completely green screen and I can only hear audio. Which codecs am I missing to play this?

  2. VOB file reader, MPEG2 splitter, MPEG2 decoder, AC3 decoder.

Or just use a decent player that has all those built it. Like MPCHC, KMPlayer, or VLC.

  3. I downloaded MPCHC and it does the same thing. It shows a completely green screen then slowly changes to a blue screen and I can hear the audio in the background...

Actually I just figured it out. Had to disable this 'asus splendid color correction' on my video card.

    Thanks!

  4. WMP 11 still won't play it at all though. I get nothing. Blank screen, doesn't even begin to play. The file name is in red off to the right.

Thats because, as jagabo posted, the ones he stated come with their own built in MPG2 codec for dvd media.

Windows in no way shape or form provides these video codec's!!

They would not want to have to give up any of their fortune to someone else for using their codec

Lord only knows why you would want to use WMP, any version 8)

  6. I just find it odd because before I recently formatted my PC I had a previous version of WMP, maybe 8, 7 or lower, but I played the very same VOBS from that version of WMP without any problems. WMP was all that I used...

You installed some other software at some point that added the necessary filters and codecs. Some other media/DVD player, a video editor, etc.

DScaler 5 is a decent free MPEG-2 codec.
You can also use ffdshow's libavcodec or libmpeg2 for DVD playback,
BUT it will give you resizing issues with subtitles for Half-D1 movies.

That's what I need, no one knows what filters codecs those would be?

The cool "tools" section over to your left under "CODECS"

  11. As El Heggunte suggested, you can use ffdshow's MPEG decoder. Microsoft's quartz.dll (part of Windows) can act as a VOB file reader. If you need an MPEG splitter you can use Haali.

  12. The problem is, I know how to download those files, but not how to get WMP to use them....

I did not see VOB file reader, MPEG2 splitter, MPEG2 decoder, or AC3 decoder listed in the codecs section...

IF you have installed the codecs correctly, WMP should be using them.

Graphedit and GraphStudio will list all the codecs installed on your computer,
but if you want to view which filters are (not) being used by the stupid Windows Media Player,
you will need the help from "FilterGraphSpy.dll":

    HTH.

  15. Of course it wouldn't be as easy as to just have an option to select 'view installed codecs'.

I have no idea how to use either of those programs to view the installed codecs.

As you may have already guessed, I know virtually nothing about codecs.

  16. GraphStudio or GraphEdit: Graph -> Insert Filters will show installed filters. But that's not going to help you because you won't know what your looking at.

    Just install Haali and ffdshow.

Then, the previous suggestion of using another media player is your best option. You started to use MPCHC and it seemed to work. What's the insistance on using WMP11 when you don't need to?
    Have a good one,

OK. Was just looking to see if it was some feature of WMP11 that you like that MPCHC didn't have or you weren't sure how to find it.

  20. The VOBs show on my laptop but not the attached 24 inch monitor.

So If you added a different screen you won't see it. Seems weird.

Probably because of video overlay/hardware acceleration. Try set the second display as the primary monitor.

Good point. I have no such problems with mpeg files. They play / display on both.
