Get a phenom II 940 or intel 9550 with a 260gtx and 4 gigs of ram and it will be under $1000 with the other parts such as hdd at 1 tb and sound card.No need for an i7.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  3. Get something based around an Intel Core i7 920. Recent Nvidia or ATI graphics cards in the US$100 to $150 range will have all the graphics power you need. Unless you plan on playing games.

I no need for an i7 system. Just get a Q9550 and you'll be set.

  7. Looks good. You might want to add a smallish hard drive to clone your OS to and set as "C" drive, and use the 1TB drive for your editing.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

I wish California would have a tax free weekend. I'd buy a car and a sailboat.

California is determined to be bankrupt and remain so.

The car and/or sailboat are for escape.

a number of things to consider:

    1) lynnfield is going to hit retail in october (if not sooner) and clarkdale will follow shortly after so going with an i7 setup is a complete waste of dough, as a matter of fact almost any intel based purchase you make at the moment is a waste of dough because as soon as lynnfield is released all existing stock will go down in price to clear out existing inventories.

    2) if you are editing SD mpeg-2 video then any modern cpu faster than an X3 720 is enough, if you are doing Hi Def H264, Divx or VC-1 then even the fastest desktop isn't fast enough to perform real time editing and/or encoding, so spending the extra dough on a high end system that still offers sub-real time performance is a waste of money.

personally if i had to build a new system right now i would do it as cheaply as possible:

    Q8200 - $120
    G41 based motherboard - <$100
    9800gt - $125
    4 gigs ddr2 1066 - <$100

i'm guessing you will probably be reusing your current hard drives, optical drive, case and power supply.

that will only set you back about $450 + tax and save the rest of your budgeted amount.

btw, since you mentioned gaming, check out the batman: arkham asylum demo, it's everything resident evil 5 should have been and i would argue that it sets the standard by which all other games of related genres should be judged.

I wouldn't entirely agree with your second point. I'm running a "old" athlon x2 and I can tell you, any time I can save editing/encoding HD material would be well worth the money. Also, the lynnfield and clarkdale are the lower end mainstream processors so the high end bloomfield based processors such as the i7's won't be going down in price much if at all until their own respective replacements come out. I don't believe we'll see mainstream real time editing for high def material for at least another few years or more so it doesn't really matter what you get now. If you asked me, I'd say that buying a computer is all about future-proofing. You'd want to buy the best you can now so that you don't regret it later wishing you'd bought something better. But, I suppose to each his own, and plus the OP already bought a computer
