I have a extensive dvd collection that i am migrating over to the wdhd player as iso files, now I would like to make dvd backups too just for safe keeping but I dont know if burning the movies as iso files on dvd will be readable in standalone dvd players.

Question is the iso format ok to burn to disk for sandalone players ? or should I do something differnt ?

Also should I keep making iso files for the wdhd or is there a better solution ? if so what is it ?

    thanks

I don't know of any standalone DVD players that can handle/play .iso files, if there are indeed any at all. (It's probably not done due to piracy concerns.)

Do you want to keep the menus and DVD extras? If so, and you have enough space to spare 5-9 GB per DVD .iso, store the .iso files. You can always create .AVI/.MP4/etc. files from the videos on the discs (better to convert from the best quality source, when possible), if you ever need to do it.

ISO is simply an image copy of your disc. So it should be exactly the same as your original disc and you should be able to burn it to an exact copy of the original disc. I say "should" because I can't rule out the possibility that someone, somewhere, won't find a way to screw it up, but that it not likely. If you use a good burner like ImgBurn (it's free) you should be fine.

I don't think the WDHD player excells as a DVD player and it's rather option poor for that purpose in my opinion, but for your needs your plan sounds fine.

Ok, I usualy rip movie only at 100% quality if possable , I almost always use shrink to remove all sub titles and any language other than english. In the past I would just burn with shrink and nero burning rom but my dvd collection is not taken care of by the kids and I think that its time to put it on the hd.

So far I have had problems with the wdhd playing vob.ts as it likes to stop at each vob, now when i use the iso it plays all the way threw with no problems at all and i am using the hdmi to a onkio 803 so I use the pcm stream to get the dd or dts and that works great with no audible loss. again I dont compress the audio or convert it as my reciever can handle the pcm stream.

O I dont care about menues ether as they just make the movie take longer to load, yea there cute but with kids you need to shave every tenth of a second you can

now can i convert the iso back to vob files like the orignal ? If not what would be the best option with in mind i am trying to also bacckup them to the hd ?
and i use imgburn with the .iso Ill go check now to see if they play
should I use a differnt container for the wdhd ? what works better and would be a better combination for my needs ?
    thanks in advance

Please look at our Glossary section and maybe Wikipedia to understand what ISO is. You don't understand what I told you already. Once you understand what ISO is, you will not have these questions. ISO is not your files to another format.

jman98, I read the glossary deffinition for iso,mkv,mp4,avi as those are the one's i hear most about but i am still confused, you said that the iso is an exact copy but when i look at the file...........

well i used power iso to look at the files and now I think I got it i see the audio ts and video ts folders......lmao I have used iso for a long time but never looked at the files.

so then I am doing this the best way for dvd and wdhd or is there a better soulution ?

    thanks

iso image of a DVD is a copy of the whole DVD (video + audio files) in one single file (an exact duplicate of the DVD in a single file format) Think of it likes a container containing all the parts (files) of the DVD.

So if you have an ISO image, you use programs like Nero, imgburn etc.. to WRITE THE IMAGE to a DVD-R and it will play in a normal DVD player like the original DVD. (Notice I wrote write IMAGE and not write DATA)

  12. Not sure if this will help or not, the best way I can put it simply is that an ISO is like a ZIP or RAR in that it is a container for your files as an exact replica minue the compression. But as with ZIP or RAR files an ISO can not be used as the executable itself for the files it contains.
Granted you can use any of a multitude of programs to MOUNT the ISO and use it that way but it still isn't using the actual ISO once mounted. you have basically tricked your computer into believing you have placed the physical CD / DVD / DVDrom or what have you in a piece of hardware on your computer.

You can burn the ISO as they are to a disc for backup or storage but to use those disc's in the future you will have to return them to the computer and continue with an ISO Reader/Burner program ABSOLUTELY NO household DVD player will read an ISO image from a disc.

I only chime in on this one as I have spent the last month + turning my entire DVD collection of over 400 movies into ISO's on my computer my next step is to turn all those ISO images into MP4's so that I may use them from my computer to be played through my X-Box 360 using its media Center Extender abilities and never again have to physically touch one of my DVDs. Now I simply need to find the BEST software to convert an ISO directly to a MP4. Let the Nightmare Begin!!!
