Is there someway to open mp4s in virtualdub without having to install codecs in window?

  2. You can try the vdub mp4 plugin, or directshow plugin. There is a list of plugin links if you scroll down:
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Virtualdub

You might still need to install the proper vfw codec for decoding to see a picture

Or you can try avidemux, which has internal splitters decoders (not reliant on system installed ones), and offers similar functionality to vdub

What about ffdshow - its seems to handle everything if you look at the codec list.

However, a file mediainfo says is AVC/AAC doesn't show up even though i believe both are set to function in ffdshow

  4. You need to set it in the ffdshow vfw configuration (gold icon, decoder tab, in this case set h.264/avc to libavcodec), not the regular configuration (red icon)

Another way is to use avisynth to open any file in vdub

Ermm, the AVC is set to libavcodec in the decoder tab, there is no AAC as far as i can see (and picture doesn't show up in say media player - I understood that it would?)

(I prefer not to use avisynth)

  6. Yes it's buggy and not consistent for me too (I prefer to use avisynth)

Are all the plugins in the correct folder?

AAC is in the audio configuration, not vfw video configuration (but that shouldn't cause no picture showing)

Are you saying the video doesn't play in a directshow player, like MPC? You need a directshow mp4 splitter, avc decoder and aac decoder.

The last 2 you should have if you set it up correctly, for a mp4 splitter look here. To register the .ax you can use radlight filter manager, graphstudio, or the command prompt manually (but this shouldn't affect vdub, which doesn't use directshow, it uses the vfw system)

Yeah, but i prefer to install (into windows) as little as possible.

I put the mp4 in the "Plugins32" folder.

Actually, it doesn't work in windows media player - it seems to get the size of the clip because it resizes the window to that, but it remains black - and it contacts microsoft to find something to play the sound but that fails

However I tried MPC and it plays the clip back fine.

I tried the MP4InputDriver.vdplugin from your link, and virtualdub (1.8.5) stopped giving me errors, but it playbacks the video all black (ie nothing there) and no sound.

Have you ever installed and used avisynth? It leaves a very small footprint and is very useful,it will let you open the mp4 without having to install a whole whack of stuff.

Yeah, a long time ago. And as I remember it only works with a lot of odd scripts as well?

I like small footprint. But the less i have to reinstall when i reinstall windows the better (usually once a month)

You only have to use a very small script to open mp4 with avisynth-
    Code:
    DirectShowSource("c:\file.mp4")
save as file.avs and open the file.avs with virtualdub.
