I've been working on a video file - cleaning up noise, etc. and find that the resulting image while cleaner, has this black contrail or ghosting that appears to the right of lighter elements when against a black background. In the sample image look to the right of the pianist's face and in other parts of the image. Is there anything that can be done about this?

I've had to boost the contrast somewhat on the example because it doesn't show up as well on the computer monitor as it does on a tv.

  2. Was that induced or made worse by your filtering, or was that present in the source?

If it was caused by you, what filters/steps did you use? and maybe post some source samples

My sense is it's not caused by me but more exposed by noise reduction and contrast/white balance enhancement - using Virtualdub. My video computer is tied up right now rendering something else but the problem with posting a source sample is it looks very different on a computer monitor than it does on the tv. It didn't really stand out until I'd rendered a DVD and played it on a tv.

You need to calibrate your monitor to get a better feel for what you are working with, or attach a TV monitor to your system so you can see this as you are filtering.

That said, this type of issue is easier to fix at the hardware level prior to capturing, rather than attempting to remove it in software afterwards. Even a different/better player may well reduce the problem.
