  1. You can run a full-size PCI-e card in a 4x or a 1x slot, at least some of the older Nvidia's will work, and reportedly most, if not all. You have to carefully cut out an opening in the rear of the plastic on the slot itself so the card will physically fit.

May have to get one of these AGP boards myself, I have 3 or 4 AGP AIW cards, including the 9600 which is still in use. Am currently on my last working AGP board, a P4 2.8 OC'd to 3.2. From what I have read the newer cards just don't have the same options, or quality.

Jsut a note on the CPU and capturing, I have seen no real extra benefit since I passed 1.8 several years ago. Now, for processing, re-encoding, and audio conversion, sure but the capture hasn't benefited any.

Also, with gaming out of the picture, I don't see the need or benefit for having a second card, unless DVI or HDMI-out is needed. Just adds more heat and complexity.

I just want to use the x600 for browsing and photo editing and to use the 9600 for capturing.
That way the 9600 will last longer and save it from wear and tear.
My 7500 just fried but it was my primary video card for the last 5 or 6 years.

  3. The ATI card is going to be active and outputting signal whether you connect it to a monitor or not, no additional wear and tear at all. Never heard of an AIW used as a second card, excepting the Wonder series and some of the newer ones. I think the AGP capture card has to be the primary video card, though I've never tried it this way.

Now that I think about it, I AM a gamer and have to use two seperate PC's for capture and gaming, though I have extras anyway.
