I know such devices exist for desktops as PCI-E cards, but are there any that I can use on a laptop?

You can check out the hauppauge hd pvr 1212.
It does component input capturing via usb. It does high def widescreen recording to m2ts files (now avaialble with mp4 container recording).
Plus it can record audio via fiber optic input in full 5.1 dolby digital.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
thanks, but this is more a standalone device, id prefer to capture with my computer so I can have full control over the process, plus its pretty expensive, $250.

Well price aside it is not standalone. It is controlled by your pc. It has normal capture software. And it does exactly what your asking for.
I don't know of any other external unit that can record from component sources. There may be by now. You will have to keep looking if this isn't in your price range.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Well, I don't need 720p capture.......... YET.
I can get a Black Magic Intensity Pro for a new desktop buildwhen the time comes, although I won't lie that this device is very tempting as well.
But right now I just wanted something small and cheap that can do 480p, didn't need 720 or 1080. -

The Blackmagic Video Recorder does SD component to h.264. They aren't clear whether 59.94fps 480p is supported.
Call them.

I hate when specs aren't specific. Since they don't say progressive, I have to assume it is 480i/576i interlace only.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
