    Hi

I purchased a Canopus ADVC 55 which has a 6 pin Firewire connector, my Mac Pro has the square type which I
    think is 9 pin.

So how do I connect the ADVC 55 to my Mac Pro.

Yes, the extra two wires are for power. If your PC only has a four pin connector, you would need a separate power supply for the ADVC.

The correct PS for it is a ADVC-PSU5V Power Supply. If you use a non-Canopus PS, it voids the warranty. They are about $40US, but look around Amazon UK and they may have them for a reasonable price.

Thinking on I believe the Mac Pro to be 9 pin firewire...

You might have some difficulty finding a 9 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable. But here's the FireWire pinouts: http://pinouts.ru/Slots/ieee1394_pinout.shtml

I assume one of these would work and if so would I still need the power adapter ?

Your Mac Pro has FW 800. THe ADVC has FW 400.
This Cable will do the trick, I have used it and it is great.

    Amazon.com 9pin to 6pin fw cable

Yes you will need Power. A retail ADVC should have come with the
PowerBrick, did you not buy this retail?
    Direct Buy from GrassValley.com

    Thanks for the reply.

The Canopus ADVC 55 was purchased from http://www.smartdv.co.uk/

The ADVC 55 can get its power via the 6 pin Firewire port, if you only have a 4 pin Firewire then you need to buy the optional Power
adapter which comes with a 6 pin to 4 pin fire wire cable. So it seems that I do not need the power adapter after all, found this out after posting.
