XP Pro 32bit Vs. 64bit ?

Not bull***ing anyone. I've taken those classes and found how basic and general they were once I had to apply those skills in the real world. Now that my son is going a bachelors in Computer Science and Networking, I'm still seeing the same type of things. Writing and speaking in general and basic terms to get them started.

Did I learn something from my computer classes back then? Absolutely. But now I'm in the point in my career where I realize how basic they were to my profession. Heck, I still work with people who can list off just as many skills you have and have just as much experience but still call their computer 'the hard drive'. Makes no difference. I translate what they say into what the real problem is and help accordingly. I take their code, figure the whether the bottleneck is CPU, memory, i/o, network or just bad code - analyze and adjust accordingly.

As I said before, sounds like for me, heavy processing encompasses more areas than what you define it as. Taking a college computer class at this point would be like you taking a 101 in electronics or engineering. Just not worth the effort since you've moved beyond it and now have real world experience behind you. Do I continue to take classes, go to seminars and user group conferences to keep up and get other certifications? Absolutely...

I'm going to pass this off as simple semantics with two different people seeing the same problem from two different backgrounds. I really don't mean any ill will...

I think I know what you mean, and my apologies for being "thin skinned", but when I say processing, I do mean processing, it is not like I am never wrong, but I do mean what I say, and I am somewhat strict in my nomenclature

I feel that you are a pretty bright dude, I don't wanna' fight w/ ya', that is counter productive, we are both here for the same reason, to help ppl, this does seem to be a war of semantics, you are the better man for saying so first, but to be honest you were "blowing me off' when I was technically correct and making a valid point

I will put that all in the past, you are helpful and that is appreciated, when I first commented it wasn't to dispute you, it was to point out an "exception to the rule"

I built and sold custom Gaming Rigs and tricked out HTPC's 9 years before I took my first PC class, and you know what? I learned a lot, and had a lot of fun

Although my field is Automotive Engineering, and my PC skills are purely a "feather in my cap", I went back to school and took a 6 credit PC hardware class this past fall to brush up for my A+ exam and even though I was in class w/ some beginners I still had a lot of fun, I got to help ppl and learn a few things (1 thing I learned is you sometimes have to put down the wrong answer to be right on the A+ exam)

for example: Where is the memory controller? On the cpu of course on all modern cpu's right?, but the A+ exam still wants you to say the north bridge lol

Do I need Computer certs to add to all my dozens of others?, of course not, but in this day and age of uncertainty, everything counts

I am going to use (actually already am) Vista Ultimate.

Which version would be better, 64bit or 32bit ?

As in, for the moment are there really any advantages to using 64bit over 32bit ?

Besides running 64bit programs, which as far as i know, i am only using 32bit programs.

Pretty much any common video encoding & editing program, mid to highend, latest photoshop, ect.

Just stick with the 32bit version
Then buy the 64bit version of the Viper

Well i picked up both the other day.

Did a search on CL & Ebay & found someone locally who had the OEM set that included both 64 & 86 (32bit) for way cheap.

I installed the 64bit version first, messed around a little bit, then wiped it clean & installed the 32bit version.

But i am not into actually installing a lot of programs yet or transferring files or HDD's yet so it's no problem to wipe it clean again and use what i decide to use.

I prefer the 2-bit version myself

I'd go with 64-bit.

Pros:
- Though your current software is 32-bit, you still get the advantage of OS operations (memory, disk...) using 64bit. (This probably more than offsets any slight disadvantage of running the 32bit programs under 64-bit.)
- Your 32-bit programs will still run AND you have the option of got to 64-bit versions when/if available without an OS change.
- No need to mess with the decision later. 64-bit has been tried and tested and seems to be overall pretty stable.

Cons:
- Driver availability for 64-bit.
- Software compatibility for Vista.

If you can get past those two cons, then everything should be pretty good.

I'd try out Win7 64 bit. The XP mode emulator for it was release as RC1 recently:

From what I've seen so far Win7 is what Vista should have been. The biggest issue is the availability of drivers for capture, and other, devices.

I recommend Vista x64 or Win 7 x64 too, preferably Win 7 x64, driver support has been pretty strong for Win 7, Creative labs, and Hauppauge came thru early

Media Center 7 still needs a lil' work from my experience w/ Build 7100, supposedly all it's issues have been worked out w/ the RTS
