  1. If my laptop screen full resolution is only 1388x760 ( somewhere around there ) but it has HDMI, is it capable of outputting the full 1080, as long as the output source is capable of receiving it ?

That depends on the display chipset.

To operate 1388x760 for LCD and 1920x1080i for HDMI at the same time, you need to set up for dual monitors. The method depends on the chipset manufacturer and the menus created by your laptop maker. For this reason you need to consult your manual for instructions.

StoneColdWhat: You probably ment 1360x768 8)

I don't know, if any laptopgraphics are able to upscale the external HDMI output to 1920x1080, if the build-in panel is limited to 1360x768. Not even saying running both in dual-mode, with different settings, as edDV suggets.

Many LCD-TV's state they are "HDMI-ready", which is 1920x1080, but only have a physical maximum resolution of 1360x768. This can only mean, that the electronics of such a beast is able to handle a true HDMI 1920x1080 input, by downscaling to 1360x768, before the signal is parsed on to the panel. So in this case it don't matter if your laptop output is limited to 1360x768, or able to expand to 1920x1080 - the LCD-TV will handle whatever you send to it.
(I have made such a "fake 1360x768 HDMI LCD-TV" work with the DVI-output from a PC in both 1920x1080 and 1360x768 resolutions).

On the other hand, I have an older (2 years!!) 26" Samsung LCD-TV in the bedroom, with 1 HDMI-input. The manual say's, that the HDMI-input vil not accept DVI-output from PC-graphics. (DVI is normally equal to HDMI, but without the audio, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Compatibility_with_DVI).

So maybe you should check the manual to your LCD-TV, before you hook up.

Just tell us the laptop model number.

I've got laptops that operate in dual monitor mode. As said above this capability depends on the display chipset.

Here are all the current NVidia notebook processors. Check for the features you want.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html

All listed have PureVideoHD. Note the "playable resolution". If you want 1920x1080 the minimum is the GeForce GTS 160M.

  7. ATI also has HDMI output on laptops, look for HD on a dedicated card(eg HD 4650).
Newegg.com has laptops with HDMI that start off at $800USD.
